Five of the final six outdoor track meets Pre ran before his death on May 30, 1975, are represented in the collage above.
Following the 26 April first race in the Oregon Twilight meet at Hayward Field, Oregon (Pre won the 10,000m), Pre ran his last five races structured around a tour he set up popularly entitled the Finnish Tour. Pre invited athletes from Finland to participate in this series. Three meets were piggybacked on existing meets: the May 15 meet in Burnaby, British Columbia (of which I've never found a photo; this meet replaced one Pre tried to set up in Seattle, but he could find no support there); the May 24 California Relays in Modesto, CA; and the May 29 NCAA Prep Meet in Eugene Oregon--his last race.
Pre set up two special meets for the Finnish Tour. The first was May 4 in Madras, Oregon, where Pre won the 3000m (Finn Rune Holman is in the distance in the photo)--Pre wanted to show off his state and wanted to include a meet east of the Cascade Mountain Range running through Oregon. The other special meet he set up was in his Pacific Ocean coastal hometown of Coos Bay, Oregon, held on his high school track at Marshfield High School. There Pre set his final American record, in the 2000m event.
If anyone can steer me to an image of Pre running in the The Oregon Twilight meet, and the Coos Bay and Burnaby meets, I would be happy to update this collage.
